Doctor arrested for illegal gender determination tests at Telangana hospital

A government doctor was arrested on Friday for allegedly conducting illegal gender determination tests at a private hospital in Telangana’s Kamareddy district. The arrest was made by Maharashtra police at Samanyita Hospital in Sriram Nagar Colony, where Dr Praveen allegedly performed the test on a pregnant woman from Maharashtra.
The incident dates back four months, when a pregnant woman from Maharashtra’s Latur, travelled to Kamareddy to undergo a gender determination test. After discovering the foetus was female, the woman is believed to have undergone an abortion at a hospital in Maharashtra.
The investigation began after a complaint was filed at a local police station in Maharashtra. The probe revealed that the illegal gender test had been conducted at the Kamareddy-based private hospital. Acting on this information, Maharashtra police coordinated with local Kamareddy authorities and arrested Dr Praveen.
This is not Praveen’s first run-in with the law. Previous complaints alleged that the hospital, operating under a different name, was involved in illegal gender determination tests. The facility was later seized by authorities, but it reopened as a fertility center, where fresh allegations of fetal gender testing and child trafficking involving hospital staff emerged.
Praveen, who was recently out on bail for a related case, continued serving as a government doctor until his suspension following these charges.
The Kamareddy police have yet to release an official statement, and further investigation is ongoing.
